Many religious philosophies do stress the returning of their great spiritual teacher at a time of impending doom. With this concept also comes the ways you must prepare yourself to receive this savior and be in good graces with him or her. Many of the preparations follow the basic tenets of the respective school of thought. Since many of them have similar rules and practices I will analyze some of them from a few angles using the Ten Commandments as a template.
You shall have no other gods before me.
This is the first commandment. Why? According to Buddhism there are many gods in many stations of existence in many realms each, with who knows how many levels of life. If this is true how could a person choose to be monotheistic if gods are plentiful? First, the original god or source supersedes all other manifestations. This original source is the key to liberation but, you must understand what it means to be a source to all manifestation. There are two basic aspects of reality. That which has never been born an that which is made manifest. The manifest depends on the not born for existence because to exist is to be dependent. That which is never born needs no support and therefore is everlasting. It is that unborn state that can have no other before it, for it is not. To truly realize this original source you also realize that there can never be any god or thing before it because it has always been and not been.
You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
This second one is complicated and would require me to likely offend someone so I will only address it in live lectures where those attending are willing to hear something very different but true.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Relates to the second one as well and therefore cannot be addressed in general public.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor the stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Think of how important it is for you to get a handle on your spiritual practice. All week you work for the impermanent without thinking how what you are working for will last but a season. This life will bear fruit and that fruit may decide your existence for what seems like eternity. With so much at stake why do you live as if when you pass on, nothing of this life comes with you? What spiritual practice and living does for you is give you a chance to be the master moving the pawns as opposed to being the pawn. Becoming the masters of your destiny takes commitment but your commitment will reap rewards beyond your current level of understanding.. If this was not so, you would be nodding instead of shaking your head. To take at least one day a week and focus on the eternal is actually a joke, but it beats doing nothing. True spiritual attainment allows you to be in a state of reverence at all time no matter what you are doing, much a like a Mage manipulates elements with no effort.
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
It is said that a child could never repay the debt owed, so to at least try is necessary. If you are fortunate to have or have had wise parents, they likely are an asset to you because they have done most of what you are about to do, or are in the process of. To not honor them and yourself is a display of ignorance that can set you back many years in your evolution. Not to say are parents our created equal because sometimes the learning is by observing and doing the opposite. Wisdom tells you which scenario applies.
You shall not murder.
No explanation needed unless you request one.
You shall not commit adultery.
This is a long post so I will be brief. Too much focus on material pleasures clouds your drive for spiritual pleasure and ultimately transcendence. That is all I will say for now.
You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
The last three I lumped together because they are very clear. When people and societies behave contrary to the last three commandments, anarchy soon follows.
It is time you have a personal revolution against all things that will trap you in the cycle of unconscious living.
